
It is built on a low peninsula in the homonymous city of Koroni. It is one of the most famous castles in Greece, on the southeastern coast of Messinia. It was built in Byzantine times – it is unknown exactly when – in a key geographical location, where, according to Pausanias, the city of ancient Asini once dominated. The long-suffering history of the castle, ancient, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman, is reflected in its walls.
