Ancient Messina was founded in 369 BC. by the Theban general Epaminondas and became the capital of the free Messenian state, after a period of about 4 centuries of occupation of the Messenian lands by the Spartans. Strong fortification walls with towers and gates survive for a length of 9.5 km and surround the city together with Mount Ithomi. Monuments of a public and religious character are preserved in the city, which show its size and importance on a political, religious, economic and social level. It is one of the most well-preserved archaeological sites, which you should definitely visit.
